Background of the study
Viral hashtags on Twitter have rapidly become instrumental in transforming language use in digital environments. In Nigeria, these hashtags have given rise to novel morphological patterns that reflect the creative ingenuity of online communities (Obi, 2023). As Twitter users coin and disseminate new forms of expression, viral hashtags often trigger morphological innovations—such as blended words, affixation, and repurposed lexemes—that depart from traditional structures (Ibrahim, 2024). These changes are indicative of a broader trend where digital culture fosters linguistic dynamism, allowing for the emergence of a hybrid morphology that merges indigenous language elements with global trends (Afolabi, 2023). The study explores how these viral hashtags not only serve as markers of social movements but also as catalysts for morphological evolution. This phenomenon provides critical insights into the interaction between digital media and language change, illustrating the capacity of social networks to shape linguistic practices (Okoro, 2023). By analyzing Twitter neologisms associated with viral hashtags, the research aims to uncover the processes through which digital communication inspires new morphological forms, contributing to our understanding of language innovation in the digital era (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
While viral hashtags have been widely recognized for their role in social mobilization, their impact on the morphological aspects of Nigerian language remains under-researched. Existing studies have primarily focused on the sociopolitical implications of hashtags, neglecting the morphological innovations that arise from these digital interactions (Afolabi, 2023). This research gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how digital trends affect language structure, particularly in a linguistically diverse setting like Nigeria. Without systematic analysis, the processes driving morphological change through viral hashtags remain poorly understood, limiting insights into the evolving nature of language in online communities (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine the morphological innovations triggered by viral hashtags on Twitter.
  2. To analyze the processes behind the creation of new morphological forms in Nigerian digital discourse.
  3. To assess the impact of these innovations on traditional language structures.

Research questions

  1. What morphological changes are associated with viral hashtags on Twitter in Nigeria?
  2. How do digital communities create and disseminate new morphological forms?
  3. What implications do these changes have for traditional Nigerian morphology?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the transformative effects of viral hashtags on Nigerian morphology. The research will inform linguists and digital media scholars about emerging patterns in language innovation and cultural expression, enhancing our understanding of digital linguistic evolution (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on the impact of viral hashtags on morphological changes within Nigerian Twitter discourse. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language practices, ensuring a concentrated analysis of the specified phenomenon.

Definitions of terms
