Background of the study
Viral hashtags on Twitter have rapidly become instrumental in transforming language use in digital environments. In Nigeria, these hashtags have given rise to novel morphological patterns that reflect the creative ingenuity of online communities (Obi, 2023). As Twitter users coin and disseminate new forms of expression, viral hashtags often trigger morphological innovations—such as blended words, affixation, and repurposed lexemes—that depart from traditional structures (Ibrahim, 2024). These changes are indicative of a broader trend where digital culture fosters linguistic dynamism, allowing for the emergence of a hybrid morphology that merges indigenous language elements with global trends (Afolabi, 2023). The study explores how these viral hashtags not only serve as markers of social movements but also as catalysts for morphological evolution.
